August 30, 2008 (Ferndale, ON) – After 40 years, the Bruce County
Plowing Mach returned to the Peninsula, and not even threatening
skies kept the large crowd away.
The
Bruce County Plowmen’s Association welcomed plowing competitors from
as far as Sudbury District, Queen of the Furrow Contestants and 275
lunch guests to their annual Plowing Match on Friday, August 29 on
the farm of Jerry and Debbie Mackie south of Ferndale.

“We definitely will not wait 40 years again to return to the
Peninsula!” stated Plowmen’s Association President, Barry Ribey, to
a full audience at the lunchtime BBQ.
“The outstanding hospitality and the community support, especially
from the Mackie family, has made today’s match a great success.”
It was a memorable day for the Mackies, as their land hosted the
last match in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula in 1968,
and their daughter Amber was crowned the 2008/09 Bruce County Queen
of the Furrow. Mackie will compete for the Ontario Queen of the
Furrow crown at the International Plowing Match & Rural Expo in
Temiskaming in September 2009.

County Plowing Match north of Wiarton. A 4H Club was started to
help young people learn about Plowing. All Bruce County 4H
Competitors will plow at the IPM this September near Teeswater.
Mackie was crowned by the 2007/08 Bruce County Queen of the
Furrow, Carrie Waugh, who will compete for the Ontario title at the
IPM in Teeswater later this month. Waugh provided this advice for
her successor, “Your year is what you make it! Do as much as you
can, get the most of it, because it will go by fast!” Four young
ladies competed in the Queen of the Furrow competition - Charm
Ireland, Teeswater; Jessie Knox, Formosa; and Samantha Scott, Lions
Head. Scott was Runner-Up in the competition.
37 plowing competitors competed in the horse, tractor, and 4-H
classes. This included 14 horse plow people, the largest group of
entries in the horse-drawn classes that the match has had in several
years. Prizes will be awarded at the Bruce County Plowmen’s
Association’s Banquet on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Tara
Legion.
The Plowmen’s Association graciously appreciates the generous
support of the local community and agricultural businesses. Their
donations and participation in the exhibitors’ area help make this
event an annual success.
